Essential Oils – How to use for Animals

Welcome to the essential oils page.  Here you will learn how to use essential oils for the health of you and your family, your pets and livestock, for culinary uses, and for cleaning.  Recipes are included for you to make your own products using essential oils.  Alternatively, if you prefer not to buy this large of variety of oils, you may purchase the products I have made using these recipes on http://www.sweetbleats.etsy.com

Legal counsel makes me say this:

Please note that I am neither a doctor nor a veterinarian. The information presented here has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  This information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.  Pregnant or lactating women or anyone with known medical allergies or conditions should consult a physician prior to the use of essential oils.  Everything presented here is for informational purposes only.

All essential oils mentioned in my blogs may be purchased here: www.mydoterra.com/sweetbleats

All lotions, soaps, bath salts, and any other handmade product I do from my farm may be purchased here when available.  Most are custom made to order and ship within 3 days: http://www.etsy.sweetbleats.com

This first blog is about essential oils and your animals and will cover domestic pets (cats and dogs) as well as horses and ruminants (goats, llamas, alpacas).  Again, I am not a veterinarian and for any serious or urgent condition you should seek your vet’s advise and I defer to a vet or vet tech for anything that appears to be contradictory.  Much of what is given here has been submitted to me by people experienced in using essential oils on pets and livestock.  I do not have experience in all of these areas myself, although I am a firm believer of using essential oils whenever possible rather than chemicals and I do use them on my animals as the needs arise.  I have cats and dogs, horses, dairy goats, chickens, rabbits and alpacas.

Dr. Janet Roark ( The Essential Oil Vet) and Dr. Mia Frezzo (SpOil your Pet) both recommend using doTERRA essential oils on pets for a number or different things. You can follow Dr. Roark on facebook under The Essential Oil Vet- Janet Roark, DVM and you can get Dr. Frezzo’s book full of essential oil protocols for just about everything for dogs and cats on aromatools.com called SpOil you Pet by Mia Frezzo, DVM.  Here’s a link to purchase this book http://www.amazon.com/SpOil-Your-Pet-Practical-Essential/dp/1937702235  Please purchase your doTERRA essential oils from me if you do not already have a wellness consultant at www.mydoterra.com/sweetbleats.

The information below has come from experienced users of essential oils who use them on their own livestock and pets and they have followed the advice of the vets in the above paragraph.

CATS

Cats are very sensitive to oils and the quality of essential oils is vital to its safe use. Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are well tolerated by cats. The controversial oils for cats are Melaleuca and Wintergreen and can be avoided but as long as you’re using doTERRA oils it’s perfectly safe according to both of these vets. I would avoid the stronger oils such as Oregano, Cinnamon, Cassia, Clove, Peppermint and Thyme since cats are more sensitive to them. A good way to use some stronger oils for your cats is to either diffuse them or to add them to their litter box so that they get on their feet little by little. *Note: be sure to dilute all essential oils when using them with cats – 1 drop in a tsp or more of carrier oil. Rubbing the oils in the inner ear where there’s no hair is a great way to get the oils on them somewhere that they aren’t able to lick them off.

Dr. Roark’s top 10 essential oils for Cats:

  1. Myrrh: pain, tooth abscesses, dermatitis, feline acne, endocrine disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, mistrust
  2. Lavender: asthma, stress, anxiety, allergies, burns, inflammation, cuts, scrapes, abscesses
  3. Frankincense: inflammation, cuts, scrapes, tumors, cancer, seizures, overall wellness
  4. Helichrysum: nerve damage, heart conditions, liver conditions, cuts, scrapes, abscesses

  9. TerraShield: fleas, mange, ticks

Personally, I usually have several farrel cats which hang out in my barn.  If a cat shows up hungry, I offer food and water.  But some only stay a short time and I simply cannot be running every stray cat that shows up to the vet.  So these are really my first line of defense for those cats but also very helpful for my long-time resident, Spice, too.

We have two dogs. One is a rescue, Shades, whom we’ve had for 6 years now and appears to be a Black Lab mix.  She lives outside most of the time except for inclement weather.  She appreciates our wrap-around covered porch and shade trees as her shelters.  She grew up running with a wild pack of dogs and came to us starving.  Although she likes to come inside during thunderstorms, she really prefers to be out.  We also have a Great Pyrenees (LGD) who is only 9 months old and is already over 70 pounds and she lives in and around the livestock full-time.  She has a barn and outbuildings for shelter, but must stay with the herd.  She is currently in training to protect my herds and flocks.  I do take both of my dogs to the vet for regular vaccinations and parasite testing.  They have never required vet treatment for illnesses or injuries where they have had to take chemical medicines other than de-wormers.  In our hot, humid, area of Texas, I would never do away with commercial heart worm medicine.  But other than that, I can treat them with essential oils.

Horses

Currently my husband and I have Missouri Fox Trotters because they are gentler on our older bones!  They are Honey and Blue. In the past I have owned several Quarter Horses, an Arabian, a Tennessee Walker / Morgan cross, and ponies.  I wish I had used essential oils sooner and would have saved a lot of money over the years!  Again, please seek your vets advice for any serious condition.

Horses- despite their size they can be sensitive. Use the same dosage for horses as for an adult human. And less for pregnant mares and ponies, etc. Use the coronary band for foot applications. The oils do not build up in the system like drugs do so reapply as needed.

Dr. Roark’s top 10 essential oils for Horses:

  1. DigestZen: ulcers, colic, diarrhea, constipation, internal parasites, general gastrointestinal wellness
  2. Frankincense: anxiety, inflammation, cuts, scrapes, sarcoids, tumors, proud flesh
  3. Balance: stress, trailering, shows, anxiety, excess energy, overall wellbeing, (for joint issues use with lemongrass and Deep Blue)

  5. Lavender: hives, allergies, fly bite sensitivity, burns, inflammation, summer itch, abscesses, conjunctivitis, tumors, vertigo, wound care
  6. Protective Blend: immune support, thrush, abscesses, bacterial or viral infections
  7. Oregano/OnGuard: abscesses, bacterial or viral infections, fungal infections, thrush, strangles, MRSA, immune support
  8. Melaleuca: hoof rot, rain root, ringworm, cuts, scrapes, dermatitis, strep, staph, wound care
  9. Breathe: heaves, allergies, sinus infections, pneumonia, upper respiratory infections, heat stroke

Livestock / Ruminants : Cattle, Goats, Sheep, Llamas, etc.

Oils known for repelling insects:

Oils known for repelling insects:  Just add carrier oil to any of these listed essential oils. Common choices are vinegar, glycerin, water, vodka or witch hazel. Castor oil is another carrier, which has anti-fungal and anti-mosquito properties. It’s stickier than many oils, which can be a good thing for a bug spray. White vinegar and apple-cider vinegar deter various kinds of flies, and when mixed with mosquito- and tick-repelling essential oils—like geranium, lemongrass, citronella, rosemary or lavender—can make a good general-use bug spray.

Cedarwood – ticks, fleas, mites, bed bugs, scorpions, mosquitos and other biting insects

Cinnamon – mosquitoes

Citronella – mosquitoes and biting flies

Clove – mosquitoes

Geranium – ticks and lice

Lavender – ticks

Lemon- fleas

Eucalyptus – mosquitoes, stable flies, sandflies, midges, deer ticks

Lemongrass – fleas and ticks

Peppermint – mosquitoes and spiders

Rosemary – mosquitoes

Natural De-Wormer Recipe:

Parasites can be deadly to animals and personally I take all of my animals to a vet on a regular basis for testing.  I do not suggest you rely solely on this information below, but rather use based on your vets recommendation and possibly for maintenance when the parasite load is not life-threatening. As mentioned previously, I live in a hot and humid area of Texas and must use commercial de-wormers at least part of the time.

3 drops Oregano, 3 drops Clove, and 3 drops DigestZen mixed with some coconut or olive oil for approximately every 100lbs of body weight. Mix all together and give orally every month or so as a preventative or if you know they have worms give this amount to the animal for a week straight.  This can be given to any animal just make sure they get atleat 1 drop of each essential oil per dose no matter their weight.

To keep them healthy or to fight off anything bacterial or viral that they may have I give 3 OnGuard beadlets for approximately every 100lbs body weight daily or at least a few times a week mixed into their feed. If they are sick up it to 6 OnGuard beadlets or add 3 drops Oregano and give it orally with some coconut oil.

Healing Salve Recipe:

2 drops Vitamin E

10 drops Lavender

10 drops Frankincense

5 drops Helicrysum

Mix well and store in a glass jar. Apply topically on cuts until healed. This will heal so fast and even stops bleeding and prevents scarring!

Conclusion of this Blog Post

First and foremost, consult your vet or vet tech for any serious illness or injury.  If your vet is knowledgeable about essential oils, then please discuss these recommendations with him/her for any serious situations.  If not and you prefer to use essential oils rather than chemicals for your animals, you may want to seek out a back-up veterinarian for those situations.

Please purchase your essential oils from me if you are not already working with another wellness advocate.  I truly believe that doTERRA is the best out there and I use this brand exclusively for myself, my husband, children, grandchildren, pets and livestock.  There are basically 3 ways to purchase the oils.

1.  If you only feel you want to buy one or two oils this year, then you may purchase on a retail basis at full cost but no other cost or fee.

2.  If you feel you will need more than just a couple oils in a year then the most economical way is by joining with a $35 fee the first year and $25 renewable fee annually thereafter (which includes a free oil).  By joining this way you will receive 25% off your purchases.

3.  If you feel that you would like to jump right in and use many oils right away and possibly a diffuser, you may want to purchase a kit which saves you up to 50% off on some of the oils plus the $35 fee is waived.

You also have the opportunity to share these oils with friends for a profit, but that is beyond the scope of this blog.

No matter which way you are most comfortable, please be assured that I will help you every step of the way. I teach free on-line classes on Facebook, will invite you to live webinars, and I’m only a phone call, txt message or e-mail away.  This includes if you only prefer to buy one oil at retail.  I do not pressure you in any way.  Here is my contact info:
